Photo Finish Results in Lady Raiders Rivalry Win
As many of the middle school girls’ basketball inner-county match ups have this year, Monday’s game between Richland and Minor Hill came down to the wire as the Lady Raiders edged the Lady Wildcats 39-38 in the final seconds.
Richland jumped out to an early lead behind the 3-point shooting of Maggie Perry, who knocked down a pair of shots from distance in the opening quarter. Jesse Jennings also added 12 first-half points. However, the Lady Raiders fell into foul trouble in both halves, helping Minor Hill to pull back within 18-14 at halftime.
The Lady Raiders again led by as many as nine points in the third quarter, but the Lady Wildcats’ defense stiffened to virtually halt their opponents’ scoring over the final 10 minutes in staging a rally.
With 43 seconds remaining, Allie Toone drove to the hoop and scored after Minor Hill had stolen the ball using their press. The basket gave the Lady Wildcats’ their first lead of the second half. Jennings answered immediately, though, driving the length of the court and converting a 3-point play with the basket and the foul to retake the lead 37-35.
The clock had to be reset twice within the final 15 seconds, but T.P. Clark’s two free throws iced the game for Richland in a one-point win.
Jennings scored a game-high 28 points, accounting for more than 70 percent of her team’s scoring on nine made baskets. Perry added a trio of shots from beyond the arc for nine points. Clark finished with two points.
Minor Hill was led by Nina Beeles, who scored 11 points including seven in the final quarter. Point guard Allie Toone and Brenna Huckaba each added 10, while Lindsey Barnickle finished with with seven points.
