Coach Returns to Head GCHS Football
Giles County Director of Schools Phillip Wright has announced that a familiar face will be returning to the sidelines at Sam Davis Stadium this fall.
David O’Connor is expected to begin his second stint as the Giles County High School head football coach beginning March 1 after spending three seasons at Buckhorn High School in New Market, Ala.
O’Connor said he enjoyed his time at GCHS and became interested in the job when it became available late this fall after the resignation of former coach Walt Smith.
“I’ve been there before, and I really liked the community, and I really liked the work ethic of the kids,” O’Connor said. “I guess I enjoyed my seven years there so much, when the job came open, it kind of intrigued me.”
In seven seasons with the Bobcat program from 2006-2012, O’Connor posted a 75-17 overall record including a Class 4A State Championship in 2009. In 2006, his first season with the program, the team finished 11-2 after winning just nine games in the previous four seasons combined. GCHS made playoff appearances in each of his seven seasons and also reached the state semifinals on three occasions. O’Connor has a combined 119-49 record between his time in Alabama and Tennessee and has won Coach of the Year awards in both states.
Wright praised the new coach for his dedication in the classroom as well and has a particular position in mind for O’Connor, which he will disclose more information about in the coming weeks.
