MMC Men’s Golf Wins 2019 RedHawk Classic
The Martin Methodist Men’s Golf team improved by 15 strokes to fend off the competition and take home the 2019 RedHawk Spring Classic Thursday at Robert Trent Jones The Shoals Fighting Joe Course.
After the RedHawks posted a round of 308 on Wednesday to finish tied for first, they improved by 15 shots in Thursday’s final round. Played among blustery winds and cool temperatures, the RedHawks finished with a two-day total of 601 — 15 shots ahead of Blue Mountain (Miss.).
Senior Eli Marty, who posted a 75 on Wednesday, bounced back with a round of 72 on Thursday to finish fifth on the individual leaderboard. Marty’s even-par round of 72 was the second-lowest on Thursday and the fourth-lowest of the tournament.
North Alabama’s Eli Hodges shot a 69 on Wednesday and posted a 73 on Thursday to win the tournament by three shots.
Fellow senior Tate Lowery followed Marty with rounds of 77 and 73 for an eighth-place finish.
Other RedHawk scores included: Justin Johns (77-74—151), David Kent Brundige (79-74—153), Tyler Turpin (80-79—159) and Torey Fusco (82-77—159).
“I thought we played well considering the course conditions and the weather,” RedHawks head coach Tim King said. “We played much better on Thursday as conditions improved somewhat. This was a good start for us to begin the year. If we can improve off of this, I like where we are headed.”
The RedHawks return to action March 18-19 when they travel to Abita Springs, La., to compete in the Loyola Invitational at Money.
