Two Booked in Counterfeiting, Theft Operation

The Giles County Sheriff’s Department (GCSD) has charged two individuals after being notified of the passing of counterfeit money Sept. 1.

GCSD Sgt. Billy Grenko was dispatched to Pilot Truck Stop to investigate. Store clerks advised that the two patrons had left the store in a Ford Mustang.

Pulaski Police Department apprehended two individuals who matched the description, identified as Russell Dan Woods, 44, of Dora, Ala., and Crystal Michelle Phelps, 33, of Cullman, Ala.

Deputies then proceeded to the location of the parked vehicle. Further investigation led to the recovery of the Ford Mustang, which was reported stolen out of Knoxville. Also recovered were several bills of counterfeit U.S. currency, a printer, paper, marijuana and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia.

Woods is charged with four counts criminal simulation and theft of property. Phelps is charged with criminal conspiracy, accessory after the fact, filing a false report, possession of a schedule VI drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both Woods and Phelps remain incarcerated at the Giles County Jail awaiting court hearings.

Grenko was assisted by deputies Schrader and Gurley of the GCSD, along with the Pulaski Police Department.

“We are seeing an increase of reports regarding the counterfeiting of U.S. currency and fraudulent use of debit/credit cards,” Sheriff Kyle Helton said. “I commend the officers for their thorough investigation regarding this incident. I would encourage the community to report any currency that appears suspicious to our office at 363-3505.”
