The story is the journey of a young girl through a magical land on Christmas Eve. Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker has become a holiday tradition for many families. STAAR Theatre’s annual performance will come to life with the help of nearly 80 talented local dancers and performers, complete with the Mouse King, a giant gingerbread house and the Sugar Plumb Fairy. They will all be at STAAR Theatre tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m.

“We will be having a full weekend of shows the sixth through the ninth with two matinees,” explained Tammy Pierchoski, executive director of STAAR Theatre at Antoinette Hall.

Dancers from the Pulaski Performing Arts Center work hard for the year leading up to the annual performance under the tutelage of owner and dance instructor, Sandy Slayton-Mavrotheris. She is also lending her directorial talents to the performance as well. Having directed a number of performances of all kinds at the theatre, veteran director MaryAnn Trimble will share in the direction of the cast.

“In the spirit of the season of giving, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Holt have allowed us to display the hand-carved nutcracker collection that Mr. Holt has created over the years in the front window during the production run,” Pierchoski said. “We are delighted as this is a true artist and we are honored to be able to showcase them for everyone to come see.

“This is what STAAR is all about — sharing our love for art in all forms with the community. The Giles Arts Council is nearly finished with the new gallery at STAAR to display local visual artistic talent. We welcome local artists to contact us at for more information.”
