RHS Softball Wins Ninth District Game, Unable to Advance Over Cornersville
The Richland High School softball team defeated Mt. Pleasant 6-3 Wednesday to move within one game of a district championship and regional appearance before falling to Cornersville 13-0 to face elimination Thursday.
The Lady Raiders (12-16, 6-4) won six regular season district contests and three more in the postseason tournament against 11-A foes, finishing a perfect 3-0 against Santa Fe, Culleoka and Mt. Pleasant. But the team was unable to upset Columbia Academy or Cornersville in seven total meetings this year, six of which counted toward District 11-A standings.
On Wednesday, RHS scored four late runs for their second-straight win, moving past Mt. Pleasant and into a spot in the loser’s bracket final the following day. Lillie Greene served as a catalyst for her team’s offense early on, scoring on an RBI double by Hope Calahan in the first and picking up an RBI single in the second to score courtesy runner Rachel Rich. The Lady Tigers tied the game with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Richland fought back in the sixth, batting around in the inning to score four runs and retake the lead, 6-2. Pitcher Anna Hart held Mt. Pleasant to a lone run in the seventh for her second-straight complete game victory. She spent much of the day effectively working out of jams with runners on base, striking out four batters and stranding nine baserunners.
Offensively, Greene finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Rich scored two runs as a courtesy runner. Calahan and Olivia Moore both doubled, and Hannah Burnett, Ali Dickey and Halle Braden each scored runs as well.
In Thursday’s game, Cornersville defeated Richland for the fifth time this season to earn a spot in the district championship against Columbia Academy. The Lady Raiders fell 13-0 in five innings including a nine-run third for the Lady Bulldogs, and opposing ace Kirsten Young threw a no-hitter. Caylee Parker and Greene both pitched for RHS in the loss. Cornersville went on to lose the championship to CA 2-0 in the nightcap.
For Richland, Calahan, Greene, Parker and Burnett were named to the all-district team, and Hart and Dickey were all-tournament selections.
The 2017 team included only two seniors in Dickey and Sara Nations.
