RHS Baseball Still Perfect in 11-A After Culleoka Sweep

District foe Culleoka took Richland down to the wire in a pair of games Tuesday, but RHS notched a pair of two-run victories to sweep the double header and remain undefeated in 11-A.

Stephen Pelfrey threw a complete game shutout in game one, and Richland (9-1-1, 5-0) scored two runs in the first inning to pull out a 2-0 victory in a pitcher’s duel. Caleb Briggs singled and stole a pair of bases to reach home without the help of an RBI in the first followed by a solo homer by Whitt Gibson for the game’s only runs. Pelfrey meanwhile struck out seven on the mound and allowed just five base hits in his third victory in the last eight days.

In a game featuring five lead changes, Richland scored a pair of late runs to win 6-4 in game two.

The Raiders pushed the first two runs across the plate with RBI base hits by Gibson and Nick Baron in the first. Culleoka promptly tied the score at 2-2 in the second before Ty Rose came home in the bottom of the inning to pull back ahead 3-2.

Culleoka tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, Nick Baron’s first on the mound after relieving starter Skylar Tarpley. Caleb Briggs pitched the final two innings of regulation, striking out three and earning the victory when Tarpley delivered the game-winning two-RBI base hit in the sixth to lift RHS to its fourth-straight win and eighth in its last nine games.

Tarpley finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Rose scored a pair of runs, going 2-for-2 with a walk and three stolen bases. Gibson and Baron also both finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Richland is scheduled to host Moore County Thursday before playing a two-game set against Giles County this weekend. The Raiders will host the Bobcats Friday at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Sam Davis Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
