RedHawks Return to NAIA National Tourney
The Martin Methodist Men’s Basketball team officially punched its ticket to Kansas City for next week’s 80th annual Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship.
After being left on the outside looking in last season, the RedHawks (22-10) earned the No. 12 at-large selection in the 32-team field and earned the No. 6 seed in the Cramer Bracket.
The RedHawks will meet No. 3 seed Life (Ga.) University in the first ballgame of the tournament. Tipoff is set for 9 a.m. at downtown historic Municipal Auditorium.
The RedHawks picked up a regular-season victory over the Running Eagles (22-10) when the teams met back in Marietta, Ga., Nov. 5.
The RedHawks will make their 10th all-time trip to the oldest national championship basketball tournament in the country.
The trip marks the third in five seasons for RedHawks head coach Scott Combs, who coached the RedHawks to a national quarterfinal berth in the team’s last trip to Kansas City in 2015.
“We could not be more excited about returning to Kansas City,” Combs said. “This is truly one of the great tournaments in all of college basketball. There is so much tradition and our guys are ecstatic to be back in the fold. We have a couple of guys with us who were on the squad the last time we qualified and they are hungry to make a deep run this season. We will watch the release show later this evening and look forward to learning our first-round opponent.”
