MMC Women Earn Third-Straight NAIA Bid
For the third time in as many seasons, the Martin Methodist Women’s Basketball team is headed to the national tournament.
The RedHawks (21-10) were included in the 32-team field for the 2017 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, which begins on Wednesday, March 15 at the Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark in Billings, Mont.
The RedHawks earned their invitation as the No. 15 at-large selection. For their efforts, the RedHawks earned a No. 8 seed in the Cramer Bracket and will meet No. 1 seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College.
This year’s field consists of 14 automatic berths, 17 at-large selections and championship host Rocky Mountain (Mont.). Automatic qualification is given to conference regular-season champions, regular-season runners-up, tournament champions or tournament runners-up depending on the league. At-large teams were determined using the final regular-season Coaches’ Top 25 poll released today.
The Blue Devils (30-2) punched their ticket to the national tournament as the No. 1 at-large selection. Lindsey Wilson claimed a 66-55 regular-season victory over the RedHawks in Pulaski in mid-November.
The RedHawks, under the direction of third-year head coach Kyle Bent, punched their ticket to the national tournament for a third-straight season. The RedHawks are seeking their first-ever national tournament win.
“To see this group of ladies make it back to the national tournament for a third straight season is extremely rewarding,” Bent said. “They have worked hard all season long and we are thrilled to be included in the field yet again. We have an awfully tough matchup in the first round in Lindsey Wilson, but we will get to work in the morning and prepare for the trip to Montana.”
Tipoff in the national tournament opener is set for 9:30 a.m. CT in Billings.
