McNairy’s Career Night Powers Lady Cats to Region Championship Win
In one of her final games in a Lady Bobcat uniform, Giles County’s Taylor McNairy scored a season-high 30 points as her team won its first Region 6-AA Championship in the last three tries, 62-45, over Christ Presbyterian Academy.
McNairy poured in 20 first-half points including four 3-point baskets, and Mary Katlyn Bruce added two more shots from downtown to give GCHS (24-9) a 33-22 lead at the half over district tournament champion, CPA (25-6).
After only scoring four in the first half, Erin Freeman took on the bulk of the offensive load in the final two quarters, scoring 14 points in the final 16 minutes of action. The game became a free throw shooting contest late, but McNairy and Freeman combined to go 13-of-14 from the line in the final quarter to preserve the team’s double-digit lead.
Addie Russell Omer scored 16 for the Lady Lions, while Libby Long chipped in 12. However, the GCHS defense shut down all-district players Carrington Washburn and Savannah LeGate for much of game, holding the pair to just 13 combined points in the victory.
McNairy led all scorers with 30 points followed by 18 from Freeman. Bruce added a third shot from distance in the third quarter to give her nine points on the night. Jayla White added a 3-pointer, and Bianca Malone scored two points.
The Lady Cats earned the right to host Saturday’s sectional contest against Pearl Cohn (23-4) with the victory. The sectional appearance is the team’s third in four years but represents the first opportunity GCHS has had to host during that span. Opening tip for Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hardin-Mayfield Gymnasium with a trip to the state tournament in Murfreesboro on the line.
CPA will meanwhile travel to East Nashville Saturday, looking to advance to the team’s second-straight state tournament.
