Lady Raiders Fall One Game Shy of Region Final
The Richland High School girls’ basketball team saw a successful 2016-17 campaign come to an end Monday, falling to Summertown 46-28 in the Region 6-A Semifinal at Dwight Clark Gymnasium.
The Lady Raiders (23-7) suffered only their seventh loss of the season but the team’s third to the Lady Eagles (23-9), who advance to play Perry County Wednesday in the championship before both teams advance to sectionals. Richland graduates four seniors from this year’s team including all-district starters Hannah Helton and Callyn Grace Schmidt as well as key reserves Madison Atchley and Ali Dickey.
RHS was not only battling Summertown but also sickness with multiple players exhibiting flu-like symptoms. Eighth grader Jesse Jennings received her first career start in place of junior Audrey Briggs.
The Lady Raiders scored just 12 points in the first half to trail 31-12 at the break. Helton, Richland’s 1,000-point scorer and District 11-A Tournament MVP, scored 14 of her team’s 16 points in the second half as her team attempted to rally, but the Lady Eagles’ lead proved insurmountable.
Helton led all scorers with 17 points. Jennings chipped in five. Maggie Perry scored three. Hope Calahan added two, and Schmidt chipped in one.
For Summertown, Josie Franks and Kaley Campbell tied for a team-high with eight points apiece.
Richland’s 23 wins mark the most for the program in nearly a decade when the 2007-08 squad finished the season 29-3 before also falling in the regional semifinal.
