Lady Raider Softball Falls to Cornersville
The Richland High School softball team nearly knocked off district leader Cornersville Tuesday, falling 8-7 to the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Raiders (3-8, 1-2) lost to Cornersville for the second-straight week as the district leader improved its record to 3-0 in 11-A play. Richland was once again forced to play catch up early, falling behind 4-1 in the first inning but rattling off three-straight runs to tie the game at 4-4 on a two-run double by Hannah Burnett in the third.
RHS took a brief 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth inning on another RBI base knock by Burnett and an RBI double by Hope Calahan. However, Cornersville chipped in three runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-6 lead. Richland placed the go-ahead runner on base in the final inning but could not complete the comeback.
In a rare sequence, Caylee Parker entered the game twice as a pitcher, starting the game and then also returning to pitch in the final two innings. Madison Foster pitched the middle innings, holding Cornersville scoreless for three-straight frames before the Lady Bulldogs tacked on the winning runs late. Both pitchers struck out two batters each.
Offensively, RHS was led by Burnett, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a walk. Parker went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Cora Henson finished 2-for-4 with two runs, and Calahan added a double, an RBI and two runs.
Richland will have an opportunity to even its district record at 2-2 Thursday when the Lady Raiders host Mt. Pleasant. They will then compete in a tournament at Zion Christian Friday and Saturday.
