Burnett’s Two-Homer Day Lifts RHS to Fourth District Win
Anna Hart pitched a complete game shutout, and the Richland High School softball team moved back above .500 in district play with a 4-0 home win over Culleoka Tuesday.
The shutout is the second recorded by a Lady Raider (7-11, 4-3) against an 11-A opponent this season after Caylee Parker threw seven shutout innings in a 9-0 win over Santa Fe March 23. Richland is a combined 4-0 this season against Culleoka, Mt. Pleasant and Santa Fe but has lost all three meetings against the district’s top two clubs, Columbia Academy and Cornersville.
In Tuesday’s game, the freshman, Hart, struck out five and stranded nine baserunners in keeping the Lady Warriors off the scoreboard. The right-hander allowed four hits and also walked four opposing hitters.
RHS took an early lead when Hannah Burnett launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the first that scored Hope Calahan, who had reached on a double. Burnett added another two-run jack in the third when she again drove in Calahan to give her team a 4-0 advantage. Culleoka loaded the bases in the fourth, but Hart induced a groundout to end the threat.
At the plate, Burnett led Richland with a 2-for-2 day with two home runs, four RBIs, a walk and two runs scored. Calahan finished 1-for-3 with a double and two runs. Lillie Greene, Ali Dickey and Madison Foster also contributed base knocks as their team outhit the Lady Warriors 6-4 on the day.
Richland is scheduled to travel to Mt. Pleasant Thursday where the team can lock up the third seed in the 11-A Tournament with a victory.
